HISTORY OF VIOLENCETom Stall ( Vigo Mortensen), his wife Edie (Maria Bello) and their son live a normal in a small town, Millbrook, Indiana. One day somethiing happens which changes their lives forever. It all begins when two men enter Tom's small coffeeshop and attempt a holdup. In his attempt to protect his employees, a fight ensues and Tom ultimately kills both the men. The local press reports his heroism and he becomes a hero in his small town.
He doesn't want any media attention, however. He prefers to continue his quiet, everyday life. When the story dies away, a mysterious stranger, Carl Fogerty shows up at the Stall home. He informs Tom, with unmistakable clarity, that his time has run out. Because He thinks that Tom is someone named Joey, with whom Carl wants to settle an old score.
Tom tries in every way possible to convince Carl that he is not Joey.

Kyle has a small but pivitol role as Bobby, a classmate of Jack Stall, who seems to take pleasure in giving Jack a hard time.
